Chair of Illustration and Print Reproduction
Faculty of Graphic Art / Artistic Design of Printed Products Moscow State University of Printing named after Ivan Fiodorov
The Faculty of Graphic Art has long and glorious history. It is rightly considered to be a successor to traditions of VHUTEMAS – the Russian “Bauhaus” – originated by outstanding persons of their time: Wassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Tatlin, Alexander Rodchenko, Pavel Florensky, Vladimir Favorsky, et al.
During 90 years of its history, the Faculty of Graphic Art brought up many outstanding artists who are crown pearls of the Russian book illustration art school.
The current pedagogical vision of the Faculty and of the Chair of Illustration and Print Reproduction successfully combines the innovative ideas of Russian Avantgarde with the basic elements of classic education in art. University lecturing is provided by famous artists, among them Boris Diodorov, Ekaterian Silina, Olga Monina.
The educational process is based on the concept of a book as an integrated body, where all components respond to artist’s ideas and composition design. Under this approach, illustrations should be designed in integration with the book structure, in harmony with the format, font graphic design, paper type and printing method. A masterpiece of a book happens if its illustrator possesses a fine sense of the aesthetic and stylistic integrity of the literature context with all layout elements; if a book is created as a piece of art.
An important methodological element of training artists in illustration is a course of classic printing graphics. Throughout their time with the University, the students master the traditional engraving skills: xylography, linocut, etching, lithography. Besides these skills, the students from the very first day of training study modern digital graphic technologies.
Many of the students and graduates of the Chair of Illustration and Print Reproduction successfully work for the best Publishing Houses of Russia, Europe, Asia, and America; they participate in and get awards of major Russian and international competitions and book art exhibitions.
